Why You Should Give Up Negativity

Negative thoughts are something that have plagued my mind for years. For as long as I can remember I have found myself always anticipating the worst outcome in any situation I thought about. Since realizing this concept of your mentality becoming your reality, I truly, honestly believe I have had a happier life. I was reading through my old tweets today (hey, that’s normal, right?) and found one that made me want to get back to my cheery self. It takes a lot of mindfulness and let’s be real, we all have awful days sometimes, but here are a few habits you should try to break:

Thinking in Extremes-

I am BEYOND guilty of this one. I’m thinking back to finals week and realizing before every test I would tell myself or my roommate I was going to fail my exam or before a presentation I would whine about how everyone would judge me. I promise you these hyperbolic thoughts do nothing but make your mindset worse to a situation going in. I’m not some positivity guru by any means, but switching a few thoughts around during your day can make a little difference. I promise you, you are not so hungry you’re going to die 😉

Gossiping & Insulting-

It is so easy to get in a group mentality and collectively make fun of or pick apart someone without said person even knowing. There have been a few times I have stopped the person talking and asked why it mattered if she was wearing those shoes or he liked to dance a certain way. It creates an awkward break in conversation but I swear the other person will stop and look at you like “oh, I mean I guess it doesn’t really matter”. I find this to be one of the hardest habits to break because I feel as humans we are always trying to position ourselves to be on top. I just try to catch myself every now and then.

Worrying-

This one relates pretty closely to the first one, but I find it a little harder to overcome. I watched a YouTube video about a year ago and I always remember the concepts of the law of attraction and behavioral thoughts. I kid you not I think about these every day. Now instead of telling myself “this isn’t going to happen, this isn’t going to happen” I put it out into the universe that it will. Not to go all the universe rules over you blah blah but if it had no affect on me I wouldn’t keep doing it a year later. It’s fun to think things will go right for you! Sometimes it feels easier to expect the worst so you won’t be let down if things go south, but it is much more satisfying when things happen the way you “knew” they would all along.

You’re probably thinking who is this random girl on the internet to tell me how I should live my life? Well I absolutely cannot give you a good answer to that other than it makes me happier in every aspect of my life when I keep a positive mindset. So many “negative” changes can be turned into learning experiences and god how cliché does it sound to hear that? Well my friends, those things are cliché for a reason!

I’m going to be incredibly cheesy and end with a quote. “An entire body of water the size of the Pacific Ocean can’t sink a ship unless it gets inside the ship”. Get out there and be mindful!

  4. Oh my gosh this is so MEEE!! I work really hard to keep my negative thoughts in perspective and its made such a difference in my life. Straight away I can recognise them for what they are. I LOVE the saying about how the water can’t sink the ship unless it gets in.
